Umbrella Circus

Why Umbrella Circus?

The idea for Umbrella Circus came about when we started offering kids circus workshops through Circus Ipswich. We received a significant number of emails from parents whose children were diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and struggled to participate in “mainstream” sports and arts programs.

Many of these children have joined our regular classes and are participating fully (and with gusto!), however there were some children who, for many different reasons, struggled to participate.

We believe strongly that circus is for EVERYBODY. So, inspired by our friend and mentor Dr Kristy Seymour and her Circus Stars school based on the Gold Coast (a circus school dedicated to children on the Autism Spectrum), we applied for an Arts Queensland Regional Arts Development Fund grant to build a program of our own. And here we are… we’ve completed a pilot of our program and have collected data to confirm that CIRCUS WORKS! There really is a place for everyone in Circus.

We called it Umbrella Circus. Because circus is for everybody.

Our goals for this program are to:

  • Build capacity and skills in kids who are on the Autism Spectrum, socially, emotionally and physically
  • Build capacity and skills in the families of these kids
  • Bring an hour of joy to our participating families each week
  • Build a circus loving community in our city

Our program has been designed by occupational therapists, circus trainers and psychologists.

Umbrella Circus runs on Saturday mornings during the school term. Each circus term is 9 weeks long.

To be a part of our program you will need to complete an application form. You can access our application pack by emailing
